Best Projects of 2022

As another year draws to a close it’s the time of the year where we reflect back on the music we received. 2022 is by far the best year from this decade so far, making a top 10 list wasn’t easy, but it had to been done. There were some albums that just didn’t make the cut, but are still great albums nonetheless, I will be adding an “honourable mentions” at the end. Alright, lets do this!

10. DigDat — Pain Built

2022 started off well and I wasn’t expecting a drill mixtape to be one of the first projects I really enjoy. Released back in January, “Pain Built” has been in consistent rotation for me. The beat choices off this mixtape are excellent and DigDat really shines on this mixtape, easily the best project that I have ever personally heard from him. Personal favourites off this mixtape include the “Intro” and “How High”.

9. Saba — Few Good Things

Four years on from his second LP “CARE FOR ME”, Saba did not disappoint and delivered a project that was better than his previous effort. Touching upon topics of self-discovery and mental happiness, the album boasts more guest appearances and some were great standouts, from the likes of Krayzie Bone, G Herbo and Black Thought.

8. Buddy — Superghetto

A project that I felt went under the radar this year, Buddy out did himself and delivered an album that was better than his previous effort, “Harlan & Alondra”. “Superghetto” is a concise 10 track LP, that provides both mellow and upbeat tracks, and Buddy continues to craft great songs with his excellent penmanship.

7. Ari Lennox — age/sex/location

Ari Lennox’s new album showcases how she continues to be one of the biggest highlights in the world of R&B music. The concept of the songs are well crafted, as it centres around Ari’s dating and romantic experiences within the digital world. Tracks such as “POF”, which is a personal favourite of mine, showcases Ari’s talents vocally and her ability to pen great songs. Definitely one of my favourite singers right now.

6. Benny The Butcher - Tana Talk 4

It’s gotten to a point where I expect a Griselda member to be in my top 10, especially Benny. The only thing I question is where they will land. It was a tough feet to follow up “Tana Talk 3” and though I prefer “TT3”, the fourth instalment is still a great album to add to the series. There are some great standouts off “TT4” and some have grown to become some of my favourite tracks from Benny, this includes “Uncle Bun” featuring 38 Spesh and not to mention the J. Cole assisted “Johnny P’s Caddy”.

5. Sault — 11

This was a group I have been meaning to check out, finally I had the opportunity to sit down and listen to one of their projects they put out this year. Though the project came out early November, it’s by far one of the best things I’ve heard so far this year. If it came out earlier and I had a little bit more time to sit with it, I’m pretty sure it would of been higher. The production work from Inflo is a major highlight and he continues to make a name for himself as a fantastic producer. I definitely will be going back in order to listen to Sault’s previous work.

4. Larry June, Jay Worthy & LNDN Drugs — 2 P’z In A Pod

Another project that went under the radar as well, Sean House provided beats that really matched and fitted Larry June’s and Jay Worthy’s vibe. “She’s Not Around” is by far one of my favourite songs of 2022, and “Big Funds” featuring CeeLo Green is also another favourite of mine off this album. Larry and Jay are also a great duo and bounce off each other and trade verses really well. I hope there are more collabs in the near future.

3. Danger Mouse & Black Thought — Cheat Codes

Looking forward to an album can feel great, but when it doesn’t meet expectations it can be gut wrenching. On the other hand, when the album hits it brings a feeling of euphoria and “Cheat Codes” by Danger Mouse and Black Thought brought me that feeling. The duo delivered a phenomenal album and exceeded all expectations. From Danger Mouse’s production, Thought’s verses and the guest appearances; Black Thought and Danger Mouse really delivered one of the best projects of 2022.

2. Knucks — ALPHA PLACE

Since making a name for himself with the release of “Home” back in 2019, there has been an exciting aura around Knucks. Similar to “Cheat Codes”, “ALPHA PLACE” doesn’t disappoint and Knucks delivers on his debut album, which is influenced by his appreciation for where he grew up. Continuing with his vivid storytelling, Knucks brings the listener to his world and his experiences. I truly believe this is just the start for the rapper and there is more great material to come.

1. Kendrick Lamar — Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers

He’s done it again! It was a long wait for a new album, but it was worth the wait. The Compton native crafted an album that dives deep into masculinity, mental health and therapy. Within this album we see Kendrick at his most vulnerable and self-reflective. Though it can be a personal project, I’m sure it’s an album that hits home for many others. Kendrick takes the listener on a rollercoaster of emotions, as the album can be both emotional and liberating at the same time. Similar to his previous efforts, “Mr. Moral & The Big Steppers” will need time in order to be digested, it’s a phenomenal album and a great addition to Kendrick’s legendary body of work.

Steve Lacy — Gemini Rights
Beyonce — Renaissance
Boldy James — Killing Nothing
The Weeknd — Dawn FM
Conway the Machine — God Don’t Mistakes
Westside Gunn — 10
Dreamville — D-Day
Little Simz - No Thank You
